We spoke with John Turner, Global Director- Crisis Management to find out about his professional background, favorite experience with McLarens, and advice for someone beginning their adjusting career.
What has been one of the most interesting or rewarding experiences you have had at McLarens?
Project wise, undoubtedly the opportunity to create something unique for an independent adjusting business has been a great opportunity; building McLarens’ global Crisis Management Team to respond to new and fast developing challenges faced in the risk management space. Our team offers a service that understands specialty coverages and how we make a huge difference to critical liquidity issues insurance market clients face when taking a hit to their brand and reputation.
On a more personal level, I love getting involved in professional development with my colleagues. It’s extremely rewarding to challenge each other’s perceptions and thought processes and there is always something new to learn, which keeps things interesting and provides a real sense of the value we bring to each other as a team.
What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have a personal passion?
Cycling, music and travel. I would cycle every day if I could. There are several spectacular routes that I ride up the Atlantic coast of North Shore Massachusetts. Being out in the elements is life affirming for me, you get to see and smell the changing seasons. I’ll ride through winter also as long as there’s not an active snow storm.
On the music front, I enjoy live events tremendously and have enjoyed both Depeche Mode and Radiohead recently. Travel is a huge passion for me too including trips to Mexico, Iceland and Norway this year, but one of my favorites was Patagonia and Cape Horn a couple of years ago.
What advice would you give someone starting out in this field or considering it as a career option?
Insurance touches and supports every element of human progress from the arts to space exploration, it’s a hidden gem in terms of career variety that’s worth exploring.
On a personal level, believe in yourself, do your homework and trust your judgment. Remember that we each build our own brand and reputation. Always do the right thing and enjoy yourself.
