We spoke with Gary Clift to learn more about his experience with McLarens and what attributed to his recognition in McLarens’ global employee award program, McLarens Platinum Circle.
What has been one of the most interesting or rewarding experiences you have had at McLarens?
Within our role in McLarens Aviation we are lucky that we get to undertake a considerable amount of overseas travel. One of my most interesting experiences to date was travelling to Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo to handle a loss involving a runway excursion on landing, the eventual disposal of the aircraft wreckage, and the various logistical problems this presented. The details presented on this assignment proved to be challenging and educating.
I look forward to further overseas travel with the McLarens team to Dubai next month as part of the McLarens Platinum Circle recognition. It will be an honour to spend time with colleagues, learn about their experience, and mix in a bit of fun too!
What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have a personal passion?
Outside of work I am a keen cyclist and partake in long distance cycling events, cycling is a great way to explore the various parts of the United Kingdom and keep fit at the same time. This year I have completed both the Dragon ride in South Wales and the Tour De Yorkshire, which took place around the Yorkshire Dales. It was the most challenging event I have done to date due to the amount of climbing throughout the course.
What advice would you give someone starting out in this field or considering it as a career option?
This is my “2nd Career” having previously been a Licensed Aircraft Engineer with 22 years’ experience with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas Airways. The one piece of advice I would pass on to anyone starting out in this field is to listen to your McLarens colleagues and do not be afraid to ask questions. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that they will be willing to pass on to you.
