A Master Mariner who has over 30 year’s extensive marine & seafaring experience on Anchor Handling Towing & Supply Vessels ,General Cargo, Project Cargo, Bulk Carriers, Containers, Multi-Purpose, Ro-Ro & other specialist vessels. I have command experience on vessels, geared and ungeared.
Having started my career with Safmarine /Maersk Line in 1984 I have worked my way up the ranks to Captain and later moved to Marine Piloting.
Employed by the South African Maritime Safety Authority as a Senior Nautical Surveyor/Principal/Proper Officer for the Port of Richards Bay ,South Africa’s Premier bulk port. Responsible for Marine Casualties/Pollution Prevention/MARPOL enforcement.
Have conducted in excess of 300 Port/Flag State Control inspections and ISPS/ISM Audits for the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) on all types and tonnages of vessels – both blue water & brown water vessels. Was also part of the team of Nautical Examiners in the Port of Durban examining candidates up to Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency.
Selected to represent SAMSA at the 2006 Ghana Seminar together with the founder of the IMO Port State Control Department to set up the “ABUJA Memorandum of Understanding” in the West African Region for Port State Control Inspections. Selected to represent SAMSA at the 14th ISPS Seminar in Tokyo 2006 to discuss and implement new measures for ISPS Audits. Have knowledge of IMO/ SOLAS/ ILO/ MARPOL/ IACS Conventions/Rules.
Employed by Mitsui O.S.K Lines – PC & PCTC Ro-Ro Division as the National Operations Manager – Africa Region.
My experience was strengthened when I was employed by the world’s largest Marine Insurer – AIG Global Marine & Energy. During my career at AIG Global Marine & Energy, I gained valuable insight in Marine Underwriting, Marine Loss Control, and Complex Marine Losses including Vetting of vessels for Seaworthiness/Cargoworthiness/Cargo Suitability.
Provided technical advice to Maritime Lawyers in relation to Casualties/Marine Claims in Australia and interacted with Australian Transport Safety Board on Marine Casualty Investigations.
Technical Adviser to AUK Marine for the development of the “National Salvage Strategy for the South African Coastline” as required by the South African Department of Transport. Consultation with all stakeholders with regards to their role and responsibility in implementing the Salvage Strategy. Review of the country’s legal obligation in the implementation of international regulations and conventions into domestic legislation.
Preparation of lashing drawings and verification of IMO Annex 13 calculations for OOG & Break-Bulk Cargoes safe stowage and transportation. Have also ensured that the overall shipment has been carried out in compliance with the CTU code (MSC-1/Circular 1497&1498 dated 16 Dec 2014.)
Extensive knowledge on Break Bulk cargoes/OOG securing/stowage/sea fastenings – checking and identifying the footprints, lifting and lashing points, flatrack capacity, documentation, space utilization. Have conduction verification of lifting drawings/checking of lifting gear, their WLL/SWL to ensure that they are suitable taking into account the weight of the cargo and the associated lifting gear.
Extensive experience with Commodities, Supply Chain Security, Cold Supply Chain Protocols – perishables & Pharmaceuticals – High Value Theft Items,Warehouse Risk & Audit Surveys for STP & Storage Risks for all major insurers.
