Vernon began his career as a Staff Auditor in 1977 with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. From 1978 to 1980 he was employed by Citicorp, initially as an internal auditor. He moved quickly to positions of greater responsibility with Citicorp including Controller and Manager for Insurance. From 1983 to 1988, he worked for American Bankers Insurance Group as Vice President where he was responsible for managing the Consumer and Commercial Finance Insurance Business. From 1988 to 1990, Vernon was President and Chief Executive Officer of Fastrac Systems, Inc., a managing general agency with national insurance programs for mortgage lenders.
From 1990 to 2004, Vernon was President and Chief Executive Officer of Maxson Young Associates, Inc., successfully organizing the 1992 management buyout of the firm from its London-based parent company.
In 2004, Vernon led the team that completed the merger of Maxson Young Associates, Inc. and McLarens International Group Limited to create McLarens Young International Ltd. (now operating as McLarens), the only employee-owned claims service provider with an integrated global office network.
Today Chalfant’s focus is on strategy, acquisitions and global initiatives across the business, encompassing all McLarens’ companies.
